Here are some of the things we will be looking out for in the Birdcage….
1. Condition & Coat
Muscles should move fluidly across the horse’s frame and be well-defined. The coat should have a healthy shine. While greys and lighter chestnuts may not carry the same glossy appearance, this is not due to a lack of effort and will be taken into account.
2. Mane
Plaiting is not essential to win Best Turned Out. However, if a mane is plaited, it should consist of a neat, odd number of small plaits along the neck, with one in the forelock as well. If left unplaited, the mane should be tidy, short, and lie neatly to the right-hand side of the neck. A mane flopping wildly while the horse tosses its head may look dramatic—but it won’t win points here!
3. Tail
Whether plaited or not, the tail should be clean, brushed, and free of tangles, bedding, or hay. If plaited, the braid should be neat at the top, with the rest of the tail flowing smoothly.
4. Quarter Marks
Quarter marks are decorative patterns applied to the horse’s hindquarters (or occasionally shoulders) using a damp brush and stencil. These highlight the horse’s powerful musculature and can look stunning—when done right. Overdoing it can make the horse look patchy, so less is often more.
5. Legs & Hooves
White markings on legs should be sparkling clean—some grooms enhance them with white chalk. Hooves should be well-trimmed, shod, and oiled for a polished finish.
6. Tack
Bridles and other gear should be spotless and in excellent condition.
7. Strapper Presentation
A beautifully presented horse deserves a smartly presented handler. While we don’t expect runway fashion, strappers should wear tidy, closed-toe shoes and ideally represent their yard or sponsor with appropriate attire. Clean boots and a neat overall appearance go a long way.
8. Would I Want to Own That Horse?
Winning Best Turned Out doesn’t mean winning the race—but it does mean standing out for all the right reasons. We’re looking for a horse that radiates care, professionalism, and pride. Racing isn’t a beauty contest, but the work behind the scenes to present a race-ready horse absolutely deserves to be recognised.
